This is a special issue devoted to statistical analysis of microarray data, based on papers from a series of recent successful meetings on microarrays in the Netherlands. (Nijmegen, August 28, 2003;Groningen March 25, 2004; Wageningen October 15, 2004).
The current papers were presented during the Nijmegen meeting. Heisterkamp and Pennings describe the use of mixtures of Beta distributions in a Bayesian analysis of microarray data, both for two-colour arrays and one-colour Affymetrix arrays. Van de Wiel presents a rank-based alternative to the popular SAM (Significance Analysis of Microarrays) method of Tusher et al.. Eilers presents a fast implementation in R of scatterplots for detecting trends in microarrays. This implementation is based on splines.
I am grateful to the referees that sent excellent refereeing reports. Their help significantly contributed to the quality of this issue.
