with an excellent and demonstrable output and/or a strong potential in the area
of biostatistics/bioinformatics. In addition to excellence in biostatistical
methodology, the applicant should have a thorough expertise in one or several
areas of application (e.g., clinical studies, preferably specialized to
particular therapeutic areas).
Familiarity with international collaborative
research is an advantage, and multidisciplinary collaboration is essential. The
applicant is expected to demonstrate leadership in research and in scientific
consultancy. He/she will intensify and enrich collaborative research efforts,
in particular within the School of Life Sciences of the tUL (transnationale
Universiteit Limburg, a joint initiative of LUC and the Universiteit
Maastricht, the Netherlands),
The applicant is willing to assume a restricted
teaching duty, primarily at the postgraduate level and probably also in a
collaborative context with scientific institutions and companies, in order to
render state-of-the-art scientific research more accessible to a larger
professional community. The successful non-Dutch speaking candidate is expected
to be able to teach in Dutch within a reasonable period of time.
The appointment will take place within the
Center for Statistics of the Limburgs Universitair Centrum. A probation period
of three years is envisaged, after which, upon successful evaluation, a tenured
appointment will take place.
The actual professorial level (docent,
hoofddocent, hoogleraar, gewoon hoogleraar) in which the appointment takes
place is based on the quality, prior experience, and seniority of the

Center for Statistics of LUC is active at the level of research, teaching, and
consultancy in statistics and related field. The Center harbors two
postgraduate programs: Master of Science in Applied Statistics and Master of
Science in Biostatistics. Members of the Center have teaching duties in the
three faculties of the LUC (Sciences, Medicine, and Applied Economy) and in the
two Schools of the tUL (School for Life Sciences and School for Information
Technology). Service courses are conducted for companies and research
institutes, as well as in several other institutions for higher education.
Several successful research lines exist within
the center, for example, in the field of mathematical statistics (e.g.,
non-parametric methods for survival data), statistical modeling (e.g.,
longitudinal, incomplete data, clustered data), biostatistics, clinical trials
(e.g., surrogate markers), epidemiology (e.g., models for infectious diseases),
statistical computing, bioinformatics, statistical genetics, mental health
methodology and registration. Formal and informal research networks exist with
partners in other Belgian universities, the United States, South Africa, the
United Kingdom, the Netherlands, etc.
Scientific statistical collaboration and
consultancy is undertaken with partners from universities, research institutes,
federal, regional, and provincial governments, and industry. Strong consultancy
links exist with several pharmaceutical companies.
